The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) of Mississippi elected Candice Chapman, PhD student in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Foundations as it's new President on March 2tth. Dr. Kathy Dooley, who has worked closely with Candice during her time in the PhD program, said Candice's presidency "is the culmination of her tireless work for this organization, which began when she was a high school student." Candice has been an active member of the NFB and a leader in the organization for 15 years. She has been very active in the organization's programs which include scholarships for blind college students and summer programs for all children.
Candice had previously earned her bachelor's degree at MSU in Educational Psychology. After graduation, she spent time in Minneapolis, Minn., doing Adjustment to Blindness Training (ATB). She had already begun exploring universities in the Midwest prior to arriving in Minneapolis. When her time in the ATB program was nearing completion, she decided on the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities School Counseling program. She completed the master's program in two years, then went to work in the field. "I gained a greater respect for research and my ability to conduct research, and also realized that in order to be the most effective counselor possible, I needed more education," she said. She knew joining MSU's Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral program was the next step.
As to what she feels benefits her education the most, Candice said the discussion based classes that "serve to expand the way that I approach the work we do as counselor and counselor educators." Classes where she is able to discuss thoughts and ideas are the ones she not only enjoys the most but also learns the most. She has also discovered that working as a supervisor to the Counselor Education master's students has come easy for her. She has learned to become a more confident and competent supervisor and counselor.
After graduation, Candice will admit she's a little indecisive because of all of her great experiences in her PhD program. She knows she wants to become a Counselor Educator and Supervisor because of the joy she's found working with master's students.
Candice will serve as NFB of MS President until 2024.
